LED (or Light Emitting Diode) technology is a type of light source that has been growing in prevalence for the past 50 years since it was introduced.  The basic science of them is that they take diode technology, which uses two electric terminals to direct an electronic pulse in one direction.  That pulse, in LED technology, is created into energy in the form of light.  This light can be emitted in the infrared and UV versions of the electromagnetic spectrum as well.  It uses semiconductor technology to do this, and I'm damned if I know what that means.

What it DOES mean is that LED light can be released using energy more efficiently, meaning that LED lights are more environmentally friendly, brighter, and are generally an all around better product than fluorescent or incandescent lights.  They are also significantly smaller light sources, meaning that they are easier to carry around AND they can be changed into tiny little emitters that can be used on high definition television sets.

The only real downside to LED technology is simply that, because it is a more advanced technology, it takes more technology to create it, making it somewhat more expensive to purchase as a product than, say, fluorescent or incandescent lights.  Because of its energy efficiency, however, it saves in the long term, making it a new technology that a lot of people are starting to substitute for the others.  It is also big in the green movement for this reason as well.  It is being used on LCD televisions as well, because it is such a small, lightweight light source that allows it to fit in with the LCD display.

High power LED spot lights have gotten big as well, because of their uses as a more energy efficient light that releases less radiation in the form of heat, which can have negative effects on the actors on a stage or a comedian on a podium, and generally emits a better light spectrum.  They are more safe for strobe lights and camera lights, which both require large amounts of voltage when being used for their flashes with incandescent lights.

High power LED spot lights are also being used as the headlights on cars, which you may recognize for their distinctively blue-ish tint on most of these cars.  They are efficient within cars as well because of the low amount of energy they emit for such a large amount of light.  Currently, a new, cheaper type of LED light is in production that produces the exact same technology, but for a significantly cheaper amount.  If you're looking for a particular type of high power LED spot light in the form of a flashlight, you can get one at your typical outdoors or hardware store.  They will be smaller and more energy efficient, but they are probably going to be more expensive than your regular lights, as the new technology is not being mass produced just yet.  As the benefits of using LED go up, the cost will go down due to new research and technology.
